Typing Reflection

To be honest, I came from a not-s tech savvy family. Both of my parents always prefer pen over keyboard, and even though my siblings has made some progress of shifting from analogue to digital, it has not been a successful shift. Because of that, I was not really into technology at first, and my typing skills and speed was pretty average. And apparently it shows through this class.

IN this IT literacy class, we have a weekly assignment to spend 30 minutes (if your speed is lower than 55 words per minute, otherwise you need to only spend 10 minutes)  on this typing practice website called Typing.com. It has a gradual practice system, starting with the basics of the home row and progresses from there. I was able to reach about an average of 53-55 words per minute (WPM) and only improved towards the end of the semester.

I started from the basic because I know my typing posture (the fingers) and my efficiency was utter rubbish. I started from the home key to learn to type with all my fingers. Being able to increase my efficiency made me feel a tad bit better about myself. Then I moved on to the more advanced level and finally learn how to type real words and sentences. Typing.com also provides games and tests, to really challenge yourself.

But then it got me thinking, what was the point? I think it does not matter how fast you type if you can not give birth to ideas yourself. I feel like this is a bit redundant and useless, since I think, the purpose of typing (at least for me) is to project your ideas from your brain to words, so it does not really matter how fast you type. This caused me to neglect the practice for god knows how long, and maybe it proves to be my downfall. But I am sticking with my belief and really believe that this is somehow unnecessary.

To be fair with the positive side, recently I have been really occupied with my papers and assignments and needed a channel to vent out my stress. So I thought rather than spending time on Netflix or YouTube which will make me even lazier, sometimes I would spend time typing words in Typing.com just to relax a bit. It gives you that little sense of achievement when you finally can reach a certain threshold and stand a bit high on the leaderboard. I know it sounds petty but it means a bit extra for me.
